Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 Review | What was good got better

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 — or Z Flip4 — is a folding cell phone option that arrived in August 2022. With this, the public has the opportunity to check whether the improvements of the new generation are in line with expectations.

Among the novelties are the polishing made to the body of the smartphone to make it even lighter and more compact, both open and closed, as well as the adjustments in the photographic part with the use of the same sensors present in the cameras of the Galaxy S22.

In addition, the experience of using the ‘Flex Mode’ feature has undergone major renovations. And for this reason, more applications from other companies are compatible with this interface tool.

Want to know if it’s worth buying the Z Flip 4? Check out my opinion in the full review.

design and construction

The smartphone follows the shell format adopted since its first generation. Although the body is very similar to the appearance already seen in the Z Flip 3, it is impossible not to notice that the South Korean has made some improvements to the device to give it an air of renewal.

A noticeable improvement on the Flip 4 is its size. Although almost imperceptible, now the smartphone is a little smaller, both in height and width. This makes the compact device even smaller when folded.

Its edges and folding area are more squares, and this makes the device look even more premium. With it open, we continue with an almost imperceptible crease already worked on in its predecessor, and this allows usability to not be hindered by the folding of the flexible display.

On its back, the cell phone comes with Gorilla Glass victus+ glass — one of the toughest versions on the market — and its edge is made of aluminum. On its right side, there are buttons for volume control and power, which also has a fingerprint reader function. On the left is the drawer that has only one entry in the slot for the carrier chip in nano-SIM format.

Above the screen notch is one of the phone’s sound outputs and the other speaker is located in the lower area of the device, next to the USB-C connection.

Galaxy Z Flip 4 in-box charger

A novelty of this generation is the presence of the charger in the box. Samsung, fortunately, made the accessory available again in the packaging of its foldable cell phones.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4, like the other folding devices of the brand, has two screens, the internal one being 6.7 inches in size to ensure good use in everyday life. The panel is 2X Dynamic AMOLED, just like the one used in the Galaxy S22 line.

Among other advantages, this display has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and HDR10+ to improve the consumption of content on streaming platforms focused on movies and series, as well as a brightness level that can reach a peak of 1,200 nits.

The level of colors presented on the display pleases me a lot. The default mode brings a great balance of saturation to give visibility closer to what the eye can see. The external mini screen has a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED panel.

In it, the information is displayed in a more adapted way, as not everything that is seen on the larger display can be consumed on the smaller one. This screen has some widgets that can be adjusted according to the user’s needs, but it’s also a great option for previewing footage.

A big plus point of this Flip 4 mini screen is the possibility to adjust the aspect ratio in which the captures will be taken to have a better perspective of what is being done. For those who use vertical video platforms — such as TikTok, Instagram, and Kwai — it is the ideal functionality for content production.

“Although the design of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has undergone occasional adjustments, the company’s great success is in the mini screen. With the implementation of aspect ratio control in photos and footage, producing content with the help of a cell phone is even easier. For those who are “Instagrammer” or “Tiktoker”, the new compact foldable from Samsung is the ideal device.”

Configuration and performance

When it comes to performance, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 can be considered the fastest phone that Samsung made available on the market in 2022. Even compared to Fold 4, it still manages to demonstrate superiority in benchmark tests.

In the 3D Mark app, Flip 4 displayed the message “Maxed Out” in Wild Life, and this indicates that it has more performance than this test is capable of tracking. Already in Wild Life Extreme, he got 2,844 points, demonstrating that he has 4% more power compared to the Z Fold 4.

In another test done in the Geekbench application, the compact foldable showed results below the device that turns into a mini tablet, as it scored 1,297 points in single-core and 3,877 in multi-core in CPU mode, and 6,366 points in the Compute version. This demonstrates that its performance is more advanced when exploiting all the cores of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset.

Complementing the performance settings, the Flip 4 has 8 GB of RAM and options ranging from 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB of internal storage. This “half a tera” version is a novelty in this generation, as it allows more space to be used for high-resolution footage.

In practice, the chipset upgrade was a big plus point of the new foldable, as Samsung managed to provide the best speed for any type of task. Even in heavier games, as in the case of Fortnite, I didn’t experience any crashes or even a drop in frame rates, as it was kept at 60 fps all the time in the Epic setting.

Flex Mode improvements

With the arrival of the One UI 4.1.1 interface based on Android 12 to the Galaxy Z flip 4, the user receives some improvements in the user experience. One of them is directly related to the ‘Flex Mode’, as this feature that helps to explore the half-open usage of the mobile in a useful way has received some updates.

Among them is the presence of new quick shortcut icons that appear in some apps to make it easier to take a screenshot, adjust the brightness or add another app in multi-window mode. For these options to appear, you need to adjust your phone to an angle of 90°.

There are specific apps focusing on photos and videos that already adjust to ‘Flex Mode’, such as the camera app and Instagram. However, TikTok is not yet fully optimized for this tool. Therefore, you cannot have the same versatility when producing content.

“The performance of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is even more advanced with the update of the device to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. The pleasant performance in any type of use combines with the updates of the ‘Flex Mode’ to give an even smarter usability and flexible.”

The main camera sensor of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 remains at 12 MP, but a small change in the size of the lens makes the images favored by a greater input of light. In addition, the photos are able to have a greater focal distance, and this facilitates the framing of objects.

The 12 MP ultra wide-angle camera , on the other hand, remains within the expectations of a generational upgrade, but it is nothing that makes it much better than the one present in the Flip 3. The only highlight is more related to the software that has a post -Improved image processing.

With this, photos in darker places or at night can have a better identification of the environment to lighten the image without exaggeration. For filming, the main camera continues with the maximum option of 4K at 60 fps.

When it comes to selfies, there’s not much to add due to the fact that Samsung has kept the 10 MP sensor with f/2.4 aperture in the Flip 4. With that, the differences between it and the predecessor are minimal.

Despite feeling a slight improvement in sharpness and image processing when shooting with HDR active, there is no big news. However, this is not a demerit, as the front camera is very good and currently one of the best for those who want to take photos with a greater focus on social networks on the go.

Sound system

There is nothing new in the sound part of the Z Flip 4, since it inherited the hardware present in the Z Flip 3. The speakers on the top and bottom of the phone reproduce the sound in stereo format.

Like other branded devices, it continues with great sound definition and consistent separation between frequencies. Because it is a thinner product, it is understandable that it does not have the same volume as the Galaxy S22 line, but it does not lack in general quality.

battery and charging

In terms of battery, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 received a well-deserved upgrade over its predecessor. Now, the device has a capacity of 3,700 mAh. In practice, this means that the user will depend a little less on the charger throughout the day to use the cell phone.

That 12% lift in specs might not seem like anything significant. However, in technical tests, the device proved to be more optimized than the Z Flip 3 at the time it passed through the hands of Canaltech analysts in 2021.

Playing content on Netflix over the course of 3 hours — with the screen brightness at 50% — the Z Flip 4 consumed 17% of its charge. This means that it would be necessary to keep it in this usage format for 17 hours to reset the battery, which is quite different from the 47% consumed by the Z Flip 3.

direct competitors

Fortunately for Samsung and unfortunately for the mobile market as a whole, the South Korean company is the only company to sell foldable cell phones in Brazil. As a result, consumers are “hostages” of the lack of options, as Motorola has not yet updated its Razr line in the country.

With that, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the only alternative among the foldable that can be considered a direct competitor of the Z Flip 4. The device has the Snapdragon 888 platform which, despite being fast, is already lagging in performance when compared to Qualcomm’s new line of chipsets.

However, this is not a demerit for the product that brings together a series of differentials reused in its successor. Like the ‘Flex Mode’ feature, which in the past generation still didn’t have so many improvements focused on the versatility of use. However, the tool still draws attention.

Currently, the average price of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is R$4,900. This value, although high, makes sense for the differentials that the smartphone delivers. However, if it appears on offer for less than R$ 4 thousand, as it appeared before the Z Flip 4 was announced, it makes even more sense.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a great device in both the high-end categorization and the foldable family. Samsung’s phone brings several features inherited from the Z Flip 3, but improved to elevate the user experience, as is the case with ‘Flex Mode’.

For those who regretted the low battery life of its predecessor, the upgrade in capacity and system optimizations made the phone a great alternative to the tops of the line with the classic bar format.

And speaking of recharging, the presence of the charger in the folding box makes the expense to have a disruptive product like it generates some benefit beyond performance and good cameras, even if it is something minimal on the part of the manufacturer.

After all, the average price of R$6,200 is not affordable for everyone, even for those who are used to buying flagships. Unlike some smartphones, it doesn’t give the user the impression that it’s costing much more than it’s really worth, although I still consider it advisable to wait a few months for it to appear at a lower price than the current one at retailers.
