Ryzen 9 7900X Review | Much more powerful than the predecessor

The Ryzen 9 7900X is the second most powerful processor among the new AMD Ryzen 7000 series, released by AMD in late September. The CPU is one of the fastest gaming CPUs on the market, and it still has plenty of processing power for content creation-related tasks, being much stronger than its predecessor, the Ryzen 9 5900X.

The Ryzen 7000 was announced at the end of August, and in addition to the Ryzen 9 7900X, we also have the Ryzen 5 7600X, Ryzen 7700X, and Ryzen 9 7950X. These CPUs are based on the new Zen 4 chip architecture, codenamed Raphael, which utilizes the new AM5 socket.

We already know that this new AMD platform is only compatible with DDR5 memories, which still have a very high cost. However, we need to assess whether users who intend to build a PC from scratch can benefit greatly from the new Ryzen in the long term, even for specific activities.

AMD sent an excellent kit for building the Ryzen 7000, and I still intend to review the motherboard – a very advanced model from Aorus Master – separately.

Despite not having an Intel processor to use in our comparison, the Ryzen 9 5900X fits like a glove in our review, as it is one of the fastest processors of the previous generation, and it is also the direct equivalent of the Ryzen 9 7900X among the Ryzen 5000.

Testing with benchmarking software
Benchmarking programs are essential in hardware testing, as they can measure the performance of processors, graphics cards, storage devices, etc., simply and easily, helping to save time and effort.

Cinebench R23

Cinebench R23 analyzes the raw performance of the processor when using only one core and also with all cores in full use. The program is very hardware intensive and is often used in stability tests.

Blender is an open source tool used in numerous activities such as rendering, 3D animation, simulation, modeling, video editing, etc. The software is very efficient at using multiple cores and threads, and also takes advantage of more modern architectures with more cache and other enhancements.

The app does three types of benchmarks, Monster, Junkshop and Classroom, with the 7900X beating the 5900X by a much higher margin than expected considering the two CPUs have the same number of cores and threads.

V-Ray analyzes processor performance for rendering images, making optimal use of multi-threading and new technologies.

We can see that the 7900X outperformed the 5900X by a wide margin, due to optimization in the new Zen 4 architecture.

PCMark 10
PCMark tests the chip’s performance in performing a variety of office-related productivity tasks. It simulates opening applications, browsing the internet, holding video conferences, accessing spreadsheets, among other activities.

As there was a gap of a few days between the tests performed with the two CPUs, there may have been some kind of update that bugged the Ryzen 9 7900X benchmarking data collection in the “video editing” category. Therefore, the software did not report the total score for the processor (see images below).

7-Zip has a built-in benchmarking tool, which indicates the chip’s performance in terms of data compression and decompression.

Here once again the Zen 4 architecture shows its strength, with the 7900X outperforming the 5900X by ample clearance, showing a huge performance gain.

HWBot x265
The HWBot x265 simulates a conversion from H264 video to H265/HEVC video, using the x265 encoder, and measuring frames per second in two possible resolutions: 1080p and 4K.

The Ryzen 9 7900X beats its predecessor by a very large margin, especially if we turn that gain into a percentage.

For an unknown reason, Time Spy Extreme did not run on the Zen 3 platform (Ryzen 9 5900X). Anyway, here’s the test performed with the Ryzen 5 7600X so that users can compare with their setups.

CPU Profile
This software tests processor performance scaling with different amounts of threads in use.

Notice how the Ryzen 9 7900X outperforms the Ryzen 9 5900X in all tests for using different amounts of threads. In addition, the frequency of the new processor is much more stable during benchmarking.

Tests with games

Although benchmarking programs are reliable to indicate the performance of the hardware, nothing more correct than carrying out tests with games in real situations. At first, I chose three titles among the most popular today. Later, I will be able to do more tests, including new titles, and also with new BIOS and driver versions.

When running Cinebench R23, the Ryzen 9 5900X reached 73.6° C, peak consumption of 143.9 W, at an ambient chill of 13° C. During the 3DMark CPU Profile test, the chip reached 91 .3°C.

The Ryzen 9 7900X reached a peak consumption of 170.68 W, with a maximum temperature of 95.4° C, in an environment with a thermal sensation of 22° C. In the 3DMark CPU Profile benchmark, the CPU reached 89, 6°C

These temperature and consumption tests are performed with software that demands a lot from the processors. These numbers tend to be less smaller during normal use, or when playing games.

direct competitors

The Ryzen 9 7900X is priced at around R$4,200 at the time of publishing this review. Considering its gaming and productivity performance, the best Intel processor I can recommend as a competitor is the Core i9-12900K. This CPU can be found for values ​​between R$3,800 and R$4,200.

The i9-12900K, like most high-end processors, whether previous or current generation, has excellent gaming performance, and can be used with cheaper DDR4 memories. The CPU’s weak point is that it is part of a platform that may soon be discontinued, unlike the R9 7900X.

Is it worth buying the Ryzen 9 7900X?

The Ryzen 9 7900X is a major evolution over its predecessor, the Ryzen 9 5900X. The new chip has gained great processing power in both single-core and multi-core, and even surpasses AMD’s fastest processor of the last generation, the Ryzen 9 5950X, in several tasks.

Considering that this new CPU has 12 cores and 24 threads, against 16 cores and 32 threads of the Ryzen 9 5950X, we realize that the Zen 4 architecture has received important improvements. For that reason, the R9 7900X is an incredible processor in terms of productivity, and it still rivals the best gaming CPUs on the market.

The Ryzen 9 7900X is a processor suitable for users who are going to build a PC from scratch, with a focus on productivity, but who do not give up the possibility of playing games with very high performance. In this case, it may be a good idea to opt for a new platform, which brings compatibility with the latest technologies.

If you already have an AM4-based PC and want more gaming performance, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is an excellent upgrade. Now, if you intend to build a PC with an Intel chip, the i9-12900K emerges as a good competitor for the Ryzen 9 7900X, especially in games.
